It’s winter time, that time of year where the weather gets that bit colder. Plenty of us are wrapping up in extra layers, drinking more hot drinks, and constantly topping up baths to have long, hot, bubble baths. Not only this, but heating is also used a lot more too. But what do you do to keep warm if your boiler breaks down and you have to wait for someone to repair it?
Firstly – don’t panic. Whilst the prospect of spending a few days without central heating may seem a little difficult, it doesn’t have to be, especially as you know someone is definitely going to be coming along to fix it soon enough!
To keep warm when the boiler breaks down, make sure that you are wearing plenty of warm layers at home. An extra layer can do a lot of good in cold houses. Also, small electric heaters can be bought in the meantime. For instance, halogen heaters are relatively cheap (starting from £10, they rarely cost over £30), and are a cheap addition to the electricity bill. For something that costs, on average, 5p per hour in electricity fuel, this halogen heater throws out a considerably large amount of heat, managing to heat a room quickly. Try not to heat parts of your house that you are not going to be residing in much whilst waiting for your heating to return – it saves on electricity cost.
Another idea is to draught-proof your house. Use draught excluders at the bottom of doors, and tape up the cracks in the sides of windows to stop cold air from entering the house through these gaps. These may seem like small options, but it makes a big difference to the temperature, and helps to prevent the hot air from escaping.
Make sure you keep the curtains drawn-this will act as an extra insulation layer to your windows, and prevent hot air from escaping. And finally, invest in some hot water bottles and/or electric blankets. Hot water bottles are quick and easy to use and can be used around the house, warming up beds in time for bedtime, for example. They are also available in a variety of covers, perfect if you’re looking for something warm to cuddle!
